Schooling in the USA

Schooling in Virginia Beach VA

Public (free) schools

Details of the numbers of public schools in Virginia Beach are as follows:

55 x Elementary (Kindergarten -5th grade)
13 x Middle (6th -8th grade)
11 x High (9th -12th grade)

Most of the schools in this region are excellent and many of have received numerous awards in academic and athletic excellence. The Virginia Beach Public Schools website www.vbschools.com is very informative and will provide information on school performance and reviews from parents and students.
When compared to the UK, the catchment criteria for schools can be somewhat confusing and it is important for you to list your preferred schools on your immediate information proforma, so the housing co-ordinator and concentrate her efforts in finding you a house within the catchment area of one of your preferred schools.
The schools, given the high concentration of NATO/Brit families, have personnel trained to help your children settle into a “foreign” environment as well as transition back to the UK.

Private schools

As an alternative to public schools there are a number of private schools (fee based) in the city. Please keep in mind that you will be required to pay an element towards the cost of the school fees.

International Baccalaureate

There are 2 x schools that are in the International Baccalaureate program. Princess Anne High for high school students (US grades 9-12) and Plaza Middle School for middle school students (US grades 6-8).
Having a house within the Princess Anne HS or Plaza MS “catchment area” does not guarantee acceptance to the IB program as it is open to everyone in the city. Below please find the contact detail for Ms Cox (HS IB) and Ms Krzewinski (MSIB) who will have far more details regarding the acceptance procedure.
