Travel tips and useful links

Always stop at the Welcome Center

On a road trip it is worth stopping at the first rest area upon entering  each state.  They are normally called Welcome Centers. The staff are very helpful and have a wealth of knowledge regarding activities, transport, accommodation etc. available.  There is also free coffee!!!

e.g. When we stayed at the NRB in New Orleans  the staff at the Welcome Center advised us that we could park our car for $5.00 for the day and travel to the French Quarter by free ferry.  This excellent information made our visit more relaxing and enjoyable without having the added pressure of finding expensive parking in an extremely busy area of the city. The ferry runs from 6am to 12 midnight.

Some people are also unaware of the existence of the DOD Lodging website which allows service personnel to stay with their families in excellent accommodation at very reasonable rates throughout the USA.
