Great things to do in the Outer Banks – OBX!

The Outer Banks has a distinctive culture and primitive charm. It’s a must visit location and these are some fun things to do.

Kill Devil Hills – Wright brothers took their first flight in 1903. Visitor Centre: Manteo. The sand dunes are incredible and you can hang glide here.

Wright Brothers Memorial – The first successful sustained powered flights in a heavier-than-air machine were made here by Wilbur and Orville Wright. Open 9-6pm. $4/free.

Bodie Island Lighthouse and Visitor Center – 8m S of jct. US158 and US64. Glimpse life as lightkeeper in late 1800s. Daily 9-6pm, free; takes about 30’. Can’t climb it.

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse – 1m SE of Buxton. 208’: tallest such brick structure; 9-6pm, $7 pp; 30’: keeper’s quarters contain visitor centre and exhibits and the area history, self-guided nature trail.

Cape Hatteras National seashore – Ocracoke, Hatteras and part of Bodie; islands connected by free bridge and free ferry; park only in designated areas as sands treacherous.

Corolla – wild horses of Currituck Outer Banks. Descendents of Spanish mustangs of conquistadores.

Post Office and General Store – original post office boxes and postmaster window. Chapel, schoolhouse and Parker&Griggs houses.

Currituck Beach Lighthouse  – climb it; 9-5pm, $7, small exhibit explains history of structures in the compound.

Fort Raleigh National Historic site – 3m N of Manteo, on Roanoke Is. Elizabethan Gardens 9-8pm; $8, $5. Lindsay Warren Visitor Centre – 17’ presentation shown on the hour. 9-6pm, free.

Lost Colony Theatre – at 8pm, $22, or $18.

FRISCO – Native American Museum and Natural History Centre: SR12, exhibits, nature trail, not Sun, 11-5pm, 30’. $5/$15 family.

Hatteras Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum – Coast Guard Rd. Not w/e]

Manteo, Roanoke Island Festival Park –  Opposite the waterfront. Centrepiece is reproduction of merchant ship used by Sir Walter Raleigh’s 1585 voyage.

Adventure Museum – interactive exhibits, demos of woodworking, blacksmithing leatherworking. Art gallery history centre and fossil pit. Film shown several times daily. Takes 2hrs. 9-5pm. $8/$5.

Roanoke Marshes Light – at the end of the pier on the waterfront. The Roanoke Marshes Light is an exterior reconstruction of the square cottage-style screw-pile lighthouse which stood at the southern entrance to Croatan Sound, near Wanchese. Open 9-5pm, free.

Ocracoke – Blackbeard, aka Edward Teach, made Ocracoke Island his hideout in 1718. Cycle hire available. There are also Wild Banker horses in Ocracoke. Surfing. Luminescent phosphorus. Reach island by free ferry on SR12 from Hatteras, or toll ferry from Cedar Island and Swan Quarter (requires reservations).

Kitty Hawk Kites – watersports, wind sports, and family friendly entertainment- locations all along the Outer Banks. Reservations required.
