All personnel with TRICARE coverage can call 1-800 TRICARE (option 1) and speak with a registered nurse at any time of the day or night.
The Nurse Advice Line isn’t designed to replace a primary care physician clinic, but provide another option, particularly after business hours or during weekends. It’s also a way to help reduce unnecessary Emergency Room visits. The goal is to help patients figure out if they need immediate care or not, or if they should see a health care provider at a later time, or even if self-care is the best option.
Before a patient is connected to a nurse, the beneficiary’s eligibility through DEERS will have to be verified.
If needed, nurses can set up same-day appointments for TRICARE beneficiaries enrolled to a military hospital or clinic. Or the nurse will direct the beneficiary to the closest urgent care center, and advise their primary care manager that a referral is needed so the patient won’t have point-of-service co-pays.
